  1. To be fair, he was a staunch abolitionist and supporter of civil rights for African-Americans, although it stopped with African-Americans, he greatly disliked Asians, Mexicans, and natives. That was not actually unusual for the time, even Justice John Harlan, the lone dissenter and Plessy V Ferguson, added to the end of his dissenting opinion, that his views did not apply to Asians.
