@thatoneguy1350 wishful thinking LOL! Old enough that I have lived around the world under the various regimes, from authoritarian to democratic. The overriding lesson was that these labels meant very little to the actual quality of life in the society, the most important thing was the amount of capital invested per capita and the competency of the state. What protected citizens from abuses by government was not nonsense about a constitution, nonsense about democracy, nonsense about an independent Judiciary, it was simply that you were viewed as a human being like everyone else and deserving the same respect do another human being. Basically, don't be a minority , but then again that's the same in the Democratic Western world.

@donald12998 yes, I'm not a fan of Napoleon, however his Wars in Europe spread the modern administrative State and put an end to feudalism and serfdom and all states he conquered, excluding Spain. For the first time since the fall of Rome, the average European was free from the authority of the church and feudal overlords, and subject only to the authority of rational administrative state. Without his actions the history of Western Civilization would be considerably different.

ALSO-RAN ! have you been to North Korea? Let me tell you, there is not feces on the street or homeless people in camped in the city centers. There is order and security throughout the country, the argument about North Korea is that the people don't have freedom. Not but it is in chaos.

@donald12998 authoritarian regimes are always clean, safe, and orderly relative to their peers. The relative economic development of a regime has nothing to do whether it is authoritarian or not, but with the level of capital invested per capita. That's why Democratic India is in poverty while authoritarian China is economically dominant. As for tyranny, I know the Bete Noir of westerners, and Americans in particular, is some all-pervasive tyrannical State, but for most peoples in the world a functional, even if tyrannical state, it would be a dream, the real tyranny they suffer is lawlessness and chaos daily fearing rape and robbery at the hands of criminal gangs and Rebel groups in possession of small arms.

ALSO-RAN ! let's put it this way, North Korea has the same GDP per capita and population as Senegal. By every measure of human development, North Korea is significantly more advanced than Senegal. On its miniscule budget, North Korea can build satellites, missiles, and nuclear weapons. Senegal cannot even produce a bicycle! Clearly, an authoritarian system of government is more efficient relative to the same level of resources. Not to mention that North Korea has generally more personal security and safety then Senegal. In North Korea as long as you do not run afoul of the government you are safe , while in Senegal one has to worry about Rebel groups and criminals.

ALSO-RAN ! In North Korea? Are you sure you are not thinking of prison camps? And for many people in "free democratic regimes", that is their regular life, not a punishment for a crime or association thereto.

ALSO-RAN ! if you are familiar with the facts, you would know that North Korea develop those missiles, those satellites, and its nuclear weapons on their own, nothing was supplied by China. Yes, North Korea significantly neglected consumer goods in order to pour resources into its military apparatus. They succeeded, and are now shifting resources back toward heavy industry in order to supply consumer goods. The question would be, as Senegal has not poured any resources into its military technological capabilities, why then do we not see a higher standard of living for the average person in Senegal? The fact is it has neither the military technological abilities of North Korea and a lower standard of living on the same GDP per capita and population.

@mrreyes5004 well now you're just making stuff up , you're putting together a mishmash of propagandic talking points. Neither Saddam Hussein's Iraq, nor the Soviet Union, nor North Korea, nor Singapore, nor China, are Rife with crime or dangerous streets. That's just stupid, you obviously have no sense whatsoever. As for their level of cleanliness, it varies to their level of economic development, but it is always higher than a Democratic Society of the same level of development. Furthermore you clearly have never spoken to anyone who's actually lived under an authoritarian regime and then saw it collapse, then saw the decline in security and functionality after it collapsed. There may be many faults with authoritarian governments, but as the name would suggest, lawlessness is not one of them.

@spfdff the American system at its core is a spoils system, so if there are no minorities to exploit, there are no spoils to divide so America will cease to be anything of value to desire.
