Onan was a "squirter". Check the Bible...

CAT pony motors were, and are, even more now, a constant course of frustration. It's not like they were ever maintained, which is kinda dumb, given that, if you're 100 miles out in the sticks, it's the only thing that will get you running, and possibly save your life. Sounds like a stuck valve to me - off-beat compression.

Advance the timing

Pretty sick of "patina". Just a dodgy reason not to do the whole job, IMO. Looked at a ZJ Orvis with "patina". Ir was basically a wreck, body-wise.

Just use a vaccum gauge, until you get close to 17 on the dial...
1
What make is the engine in it? Continental?
1
Chat GPT is not to be trusted, sorry.
1
Laundry powder is good, too - as long as you have no cuts in your hands...
1
Shit. I didn't expect the up/down movement on the crankshaft. So I WAS wrong. Damn, I hate that.

Nice machine.
1
It disrupts the molecularr structure when you whack it.
1
Camshaft bearings???
1
One clean piston crown - looks water blasted to me.
1
Well done you.
1
They're probably built in Chinese prisons. No motivation for quality contiol.

Yous need a pretty hard pencil, ho-ho. Bring on the "put some lead in your pencil" jokes. Don't think what you're doing, as I watch, will last, but it might get you running temporarily. Meanwhile, in the background, a trainload full of magneto covers is passing...

Airless sprayers. DEFFO!

Steam.
1
Sorry, I see you think the same way as me.

Thriumph/Standard/Massey Ferguson?
1
Not nice with that positive battery lead having zero insulation.

You can only dream, can't you?
1
Pretty brave, mate... Inflating a flat tyre on a split rim wheel while positioning yourself in front of it.
1
Methylated spirits works.
1
I take it that you have read your Bible, like a good boy, and you will know all about Onan... "Nuff said." They're damn fine engines.
1
Ooops. Or the crankshaft has moved forward?
1
It'll go, mate.
1
Put it in the Jeep.
1
Probably some kind of Coolant Stop Leak additive... Some work, some don't.
1
Loctite the things!
1
Smoothest running CAT pony motor I've ever heard, and I used to work for CAT.
1
Looks pretty corrosion free - from the top...

I'll take a chance here, before watching the video, and guess that lack of maintenance, as well as Caterpillar's refusal to supply basic spares probably killed them. E.g. points, condensers and so on. Now to watch, and see how wrong I may be. I might have to eat my words, but I did work in the parts department of a CAT dealer for a while, so I'm fairly certain that I'm not 100% wrong....
1
Well, how wrong I was.
1
Compression test on a dry engine? Pretty good readings! I'll take a stab in the dark, and guess that the crank thrust washers either went missing or wore away with all that good oil. So the crank has moved back, hence the need to move the starter back????
1
Good machine, man.
1
Good score, my friend.

RTV is NOT silicone, and there's a reason for that. Google it.
1
Super-cool deranged dog!
1
Gotta work on your unloading technnique, and why didn't you leave the windows down to anti-stench the cab on the trip back?
