@javiermiranda5769 Ukraine had no chance to join Nato and Putin invaded anyway just because he could and wanted to. It was never about Nato expansion. Putin wants Ukraine. He does not consider this country to be real and Nato is an excuse, not a reason. The reason was Putin's ego.

USA did not try to annex Cuba and never claimed that this country is "not real". Ukraine is not Nato member and that is why Putin invaded. Because he wants Ukraine as a part of Russia and he could invade non Nato Ukraine only.

Russia always feels provoked and needs excuses, not a reason. Russia has always been a terrible neighbor and I am tired of those who try to "understand Russia". We owe Russia nothing. Russia is not Eastern Europe's master anymore.

@nataspent Nato does not invite and does not force anybody do join. You need to apply and meet the critera. And do you care about Eastern Europeans, their safety, their security concerns and their history with russian and soviet aggression? Putin wants Ukraine. Who is Russia afraid of? Give me a break and stop looking for excuses for Putin's sick legacy. It was never about Nato. Ukraine was nowhere near Nato membership. Putin invaded because he could, wanted to and did think it would be easy. It is funny how you all keep ignoring Eastern Euroeans ad their agenda in al of this. They owe Russia nothing Russia is not their daddy.

@ Who poisoned Yushchenko? Yanukovich refused to sign deal with EU, lost support of his own party, was voted out by Ukrainian Parliament and run to Moscow where he belongs to.

@nataspent First of all, excuse is not a reason. Second of all Russia is not a "special need" country. It is not even a super power anymore. We can not always bow to Russia's demands and care about her sensitive feelings. I am not even sure if russian nuclear weapon works. Ukraine had no chane to join and Putin invaded anyway. Excuses is not a reason. It is an excuse.

Mearsheimer is stucked in Cold War era and never stopped treating Eastern Europe as soviet backyard. He never cared for Eastern Europeans, their freedom, their will and their agenda in all of this.

@nataspent One last thing. Nobody invades nuclear powers. Russia invades or makes some mess in Non Nato countries so whose security concerns are real here? Why did Finland join Nato? Because Russia invaded NON NATO neighbour. That is why! Putin knows he can invade non Nato Ukraine only. Blaming countries for their will to join Nato is like blaming a victim for calling the police. Russia must look in the mirror and stop giving them reasons to join. Putin wants russian emire back and neutral means "easy to invade because nobody would help them" for him.

@SteveB-nx2uo Ukraine's political path is none of Russia's bussines. Russia's terrible behaviour is the reason why Ukraine turnts its back on Russia. The same for most of Eastern Europe. Russia has nothing to offer. Russia brings war, poverty, lack of freedom.

@ bay of bigs what? Is Ukraine Nato member or did I miss something? Russia invades in order to annex and Russia can invade non Nato Ukraine only. Putin wants Ukraine as a part of Russia. He did think it would be easy to overrun non Nato neighbour and he was wrong. Nato is an excuse, not a reason. Nato stops Russia's greed. Putin can not annex as much as he would like to.
