Russia loves taking all USSR glory and always skips its dark sides. USSR started WWII together with Germany. They were allies till 1941. They both invaded Poland in september 1939 and held joined victory parade. USSR would do nothing without American land lease. Russia wins only if others help Russia to win.

All the rest are excuses. It is about Putin's legacy and Putin's ego. USA is a super power, USA does not annex unlike Russia.

If Russia was a good neighbour, there would be no need to join Nato in order to be secured. Ukraine had no chance to join Nato. Putin hates Nato because Nato stops his greed. He wants Ukraine. If Ukraine had been in Nato, he would have never invaded Ukraine. It is like blaming a victim for caliing the police. Putin is anything but peaceful. He invaded Ukraine because he could and wanted to. He wants Ukraine and could invade non Nato Ukraine only.
