  1. Joining Nato is something countries apply and ask for with their own free will. Warsaw pact membership was not. And Warsaw pact was the only alliance to invade its own members when they tried to leave that "soviet paradise". You ca not force any country to love Russia and invading your neighbors is not the best way to make friends.

Ukraine is not even Nato member and had no chance to join after 2014. Putin invaded because he could invade non Nato Ukraine only. He wants Ukraine.
