Poland was poorer than Ukraine back in 1991 and look where they are now.

@defendfreedom1390 No. It would not. Look at Baltic States and Ukraine for example. Both were soviet republics, they were parts of USSR. Look how does a country look like when it is left alone next to Russia and without EU and Nato support.

@defendfreedom1390 Poland's gdp has grown amazing since 2004

In Poland it was about social benefits and lower retirement age, number of things like that. Poles are pro EU and chose Eurosceptc govenment at one point. Poland is a land of paradox. Besides for many years all those Eastern European ctizent did not feel welcome and were not treated the same way. It was about "We will give you your dignity back"

Poland and Croatia worked hard and knew EU is not a Santa Claus who would give you everything for free.

Countries like Estonia improved so much. They left many "old EU" countries behind on so many levels. Many people in Western Europe have no clue it turned out that way but ignorance is not a sin.
7
Who invaded Ukraine? Is Russia new EU member which joined in 2004?
6
@ABC-ABC1234 Poles did work hard and they took all those low paid jobs Western Europeans did not want to. EU was not a Stanta Claus who gave Poland everything for free. Western Europe's gdp grew as well thanks to free market and hard working Poles. It works both ways.
5
Didn't they join in 2007 instead od 2004? Here you have why.

@serebii666 It is a wider topic and interesting thing to elaborate. It is funny how Greece is considered to be "West" despite it is not. I see many Western Europeans are ignorants and they have no clue what was the difference between "soviet republic" and "soviet satelite". Some seem to be suprised we do not speak russian or that we use latin alphabeth. in Poland. And how much longer are they going to call us "former soviet" whle talking about EU or Nato? Would Germans be happy if I called them former...you know who...? If I had to choose where to live and pick one between Greece and Estonia I would choose Estonia.I love Greece for vacation but they have so many economic problems I would not want to live there 360 days a year. And it is high time everyone stopped looking at us through Russia's eyes. It pisses me off when I go for vacation and waiter in a restaurant greets me with his basic russain language skills. I don't speak russian and have nothing to do with that country.

EU enlargement is not a reason for Western Europe's impoverishment. It was a chance for Western Europe as well. Some did not want to see it and some simly love blaming others for their own failures. Western Europe got free market and skilled hard working people from new EU member states. Eastern Europeans took all those low paid jobs Western Europeans did not want to. Their gdp did grow thanks to that as well. So Whose fault is that?
4
@HOPEfullBoi01 There was a difference between soviet republic and soviet satelite state. Western Euroepan ignorants still mix these two things.
4
@delta_glider4362 What was the other choice? Being Russia's victim again? No, thanks.
4
@michaelwilson9921 Russia never applied and did not want to meet the criteria. Russia had no clue it is not how it works.
3
Małym krajom jest łatwiej. Polska jest większa niż pozostałe 9 nowych krajów UE razem wziętych. W Warszawie mieszka więcej ludzi niż na takiej Łotwie i tyle co w całej Słowenii.
3
Russia excluded herself from Europe.
3
@ABC-ABC1234 Did I say otherwise?
2
Western Europe got free market, educated skilled workers. It works both ways. Some people simply prefer being blind for data.
2
@PavelQuiteGood I was perfectly fine with "Chech Republic" term and I have no clue why and what for you needed to change it.
2
@kenbristow6771 There is nothing wrong with that. They work because they can and want to.
2
You have no clue. They would become Russia's victims again. Look at Ukraine.
2
@happyfelix1440 Russia is anything but super power. Russia itself never applied.
2
Eastern Europe is split and devided. Try to compare level of corruption in Poland and Ukraine or Russia and then we can talk.
2
Because the starting point was so low back then.
2
Would you like to stay outside of EU and share the same fate as Ukraine? I do not think so.
2
@kyleolson9636 Poland is Germany''s bigger trading partner than pre war Russia and hardly anyone was aware of it.
1
Most Russians have no clue what is the dfference between EU and Nato.
1
@michaelwilson9921 Russia never applied and did not want to stay in line and meet the criteria. Russia must stop playing the victim card. Russia's acts speak louder than words. Russia does not belong here.
1
@michaelwilson9921 Nobody trusts Russia. Russia says everything that suits russian narrative.
1
@jakubowczarek193 I am Polish myself. The point is only Poles use "Central Europe" term to make themselves feel better and not to be associated with Russia.
1
1
free market, educated skilled workers, stable neighborhood.

@simorx580 Exactly.
