I don't doubt the fact that the British government made attempts to prevent the continuation of the slave trade; but whether that was through some high moral approach or denying others the economic advantage of having slaves is something to consider. They didn't seem to have any problem with (for all tense an purposes) enslaving their own people in mines and other cruel and barbaric conditions.
