I was born in the small Welsh town of Cardigan (Ceredigion) in West Wales in 1950. The main street divides the town in two parts that historically, separated the very poor from the more affluent. The poor area was, and still is known as the Mwldan. When I was a kid, it was still considered the 'rough' area. I read a book called 'Last of the Mwldans' written by a man who grew up there sometime between the first and second world wars. He describes how women use to have knife fights in the streets of the surrounding slums as he watched from his bedroom window.
