I emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1970. At the time Australia was encouraging (and even subsidising) migrants; particularly from Britain and other parts of Europe. The majority of non English speaking migrants seemed to be Italian or Greek who were subjected to quite a bit of racism from 'white' Australia. They were quite rightly offended by this attitude and equally correctly felt they had as much right to live here as anyone else. Their approach to immigration changed a bit when a few years later their communities were inundated with Vietnamese refugees following the end of the Vietnam war. It probably changed again for the Vietnamese immigrants when a whole pile of Muslims turned up on their doorstep!
