As a kid, I didn't go anywhere without at least a pen knife. I was in the scouts so a sheath knife was required (and inspected) on parade and many activities. We all use to make our own bows and arrows from the trees in the wooded areas of the local fields. The use of a knife was essential. I don't recall one incident of threatening behavior or injury.
