  1. I was very lucky because I failed my eleven plus in 1960 and went to a brand new (only opened one year prior) secondary modern school. It was very well equipped and (for the most part) had excellent teachers. The school also still supported a boxing team which for me made the experience of school bearable. I still didn't excel academically, although at least I managed to achieve some degree of success with five 'O' levels. Grammar school would have been a disaster for me.
