I think the ultimate goal would be to have no pilots. A sad day for aviation in many ways but with technological advancement in automation moving at the rate it is, it's not that difficult to see that coming. I hate to say that statistically, most accidents are linked to the human factor (I stand to be corrected) both within flight crew and air traffic control circles so fully automated systems are not necessarily something to put in the 'scary bin'. I've watched enough 'Air Crash Investigations' programs to only have a certain amount of faith in pilots' competency. After all, most of them are human😉

 @nikobelic4251 I'm sure Airbus or Boeing don't care if their aircraft have pilots or not, but I imagine the airlines are the ones who will be considering the cost benefit analysis.

 @nikobelic4251 I suppose you're right insofar as at the moment the responsibility for flight crew failure is generally proportioned to the airline. What I really was trying to say was that Boeing and Airbus probably don't have any particular invested interest in changing because the financial imperative of reducing costs by removing pilots is likely to come from the airline companies.
