If the hiring of Air Traffic Controllers was frozen in January, it would have no bearing on the current state of affairs. It takes more than a few days to train them.

@STONEWALL148 I agree that correct staffing levels should be maintained, although its probably not unusual to have shortages in a highly skilled occupation like air traffic. That can be overcome with overtime and fatigue management regulations. However, we can't assume that has any bearing on this incident.

@Ali-ps8rm My father was an air traffic controller in the Royal Air Force for twenty-seven years out of the thirty-five years of service. I accompanied him at work on a number of occasions, including the long, lonely night shifts. I got the impression that the focus was purely the job at hand. The morale seemed to emminate from the sergeant's mess, which I also attended as a teenager dressed in a suit with cuff links on my shirt sleeves. Different times.

Totally agree. While I applaud the vilification of DEI ideology, particularly in those sorts of occupations, this is not the time to try and score personal points. Having said that, I find it disturbing that you consider the role of a journalist is "To float personal theories, speculate wildly or assign blame before facts emerge." I would have thought the role of journalists is to report the known facts and keep their opinions to themselves. Maybe that's too much to expect.
