This is a new idea? Got to be kidding. In 1968 (well before the EU) I worked as a waiter in a holiday camp in Great Yarmouth. Half the waiters were Spanish, and apart from understanding a few words, none of them spoke English.

@annishilcock4587 Not sure myself why I mentioned that. They were all great guys and were only there for a relatively short period of time during the summer, so I wouldn't expect them to be particularly fluent. My only criticism of them was that they seemed to attract all the girls. As far as ex-pats actually residing in Spain and not speaking the language, I would agree that it's a disgrace. I emigrated to Australia many years ago, and I've made every effort to understand Australians. I'm still working on it.
