In Australia, we have GST (Goods and Services Tax). There are products like fresh fruit and vegetables (I think meat too) are exempt. It's supposed to have three main purposes. First, to reduce income tax. Second, to mitigate tax evasion and thirdly to remove some of the various state stamp duties, etc. Naturally, the various stamp duties seem to still be around.

@tazgecko In theory the GST was supposed to be balanced by lower income tax. Of course, it depended on what people purchased. I think it was also designed to target small business who were perceived as evading tax, which now they would pay when they spent money.
