My father joined the Royal Air Force in 1937 and served until retirement in 1972. I remember him saying "The RAF will collapse behind me". I assume he wasn't just referring to his own personal absence but the lack of resolve to maintain a credible force. At the time I thought it was just a sense of being personally disheartened, but I think he was probably right.
