When I was twenty, I was accepted into an officer training unit with the Australian army reserve (then called the Citizens Military Forces). Drinking after training sessions was considered compulsory. If you didn't, it put into question your esprit de corps. I left before just before graduating and became a skydiving instructor where once again, getting paralytic after a day's jumping was the order of the day. That level of routine drinking took a long time to get past. I still occasionally enjoy having a few more drinks than is recommended but fortunately I don't seem to develop any withdrawal symptoms when I go long periods (sometimes months) without. Liver and kidneys still functioning fine.
