  1. Moving to a different culture, say the Mayans (where it is hot hot hot) they too had the same alignments, so the winter solstice said that was the shortest day of the year. So it is something to do with seasonal planting of crops. The Egyptians too, had that winter solstice figured out and NOT BECAUSE OF TEMPERATURE.
