My machinist friend never uses a drill bit right out of the box. 50+years experience. He grinds them sharper...because factory sharpening IS A JOKE. The machinist drills through tons of metal so he knows how to hand sharpen the drill on the grindstone. No specific make. I learned how to do it once in school - have forgotten that talent and always have one flute edge cutting more than the other. When you had to add more weight, I could see the point was not cutting anymore...so the drills are dull. Most of my drill bits cut into wood okay and even aluminum or copper. Steel is marginal.

Nope. A machinist would FIRST sharpen the drill bit. Those that needed more weight, were already dull on the point edge "it has a specific name and a specific angle. Forgotten over the years. Most of my twist bits are decent for copper, aluminum, brass, lead wood, plastic & soft fudgsicle.
