  2. First off, it was NEVER CALLED the BEETLE by VW. Nor Hitler-mobile. It and the KarmanGhia were called Type 1.; the Van or flat bed truck Type 2; the station wagon and hatchback Type 3; the 411 was Type 4. . In the early days of shipping, the shipyards were basically manned by Englishmen who were the majority of the dockworkers. They were still stinging from the war. So, most of the small import cars that were being shipped over were from Britain. International trade... When Germany started to send over the Type 1 car, the dockworkers JOKED about it and meant to call it derogatory names. "Beetle" or "Bug" was meant to put the car down. Next to calling it German junk. . That name "Beetle Bug" actually boosted its endearing qualities, besides being very rugged drive anywhere, and drives a long ways on a sip of gas...summer or winter....and the car held together. Models hardly ever changed so you never looked like you were driving an OLD car. It was recognizable and people who drove one waved to other drivers who were driving one. A big happy family. VW factory called it TYPE 1 up to 1970. In 1971 they made a reference to superBeetle, though it still looked like all the others and the Owner's manual still called it Type 1. The real Super Beetle started in 1973 as the entire suspension system was changed in the front end with struts and coil springs holding the front together for better cornering and suspension(instead of the torsion bar suspension that was in all VW up to that time. The engine was at its maximum size of 1600cc (carbed or fuel injection) with a larger intake manifold for larger intake valves which gave it more power than the older heads with the smaller intake valves. They still made the standard Beetle(torsion bar suspension all the way around VIN 111. The SuperBeetle was VIN 113. But this added power was not enough for the Consumers and Ralph Nader and air quality became the THING. VW could not make the air cooled engine any cleaner than it was; so it failed the California clean air tests. The air cooled engine died around about 1977. That is the FACTS (from a Kraut can owner) Also, Ferdinand Porsche was an auto maker. He did not care about politics. Government has deep pockets. At the time,1937, Hitler was the popular leader in Germany...no war, people were working. . No different than Henry FORD. Car manufacturing entrepreneurs do not care who was running the government, he would seek money from them if he could (Democrat or Republican)Makes no difference. The government has a lot of money and can give tax concessions.
