  1. By the time the Middle Ages rolled around, much of the Roman advances had been forgotten. Esp. sanitation, roads(a path was good enough), medicine, education(just Latin and kept to the church, baths,..much of that stuff got forgotten in the Dark Ages. - the age of no writing.
