Mud has a way of making Iron RUST. So weapons that were not immediately picked up by the Germans of that time period would be rust or red iron oxide. Lead does not oxidize as fast so the lead pellets would be around. It is a big forest.

PAGAN? Who? They ALL were non Christians. Germans had (depending where you were) different Gods - in the North they were more like the Viking Gods. Survivors of any attacker was put to death mainly because they "no speaka da language" and would ALWAYS BE AN ENEMY. They invaded. Somebody has to be the last to die in any battle. Obviously, no body really was going to haul the "bag of meat" home so they left them there in the forest to rot away. Did I hear the narrator say 6 years before the Romans came back to that area to see that pile of bones stretched out for miles. Not much in the way of wild animals to eat them either(saber toothed squirrels maybe and maybe the odd wild pig or crow.) Saber tooth bacteria did the rest so it was stinky in that region for a long time until all the flesh was gone. 20,000 soldiers plus women and slaves and kids so more like 35,000 people. Arminius was firstly a German. Just because he was given Roman citizenship (does not change his heritage) even though this was the thought process of the Romans in authority. He would be still picked upon by the "true born" Romans. So, it would go for any society. Visit the showers sometime. A Romulan will always be a Romulan
