This was a common form of punishment because not all people could read Latin (as Rome engulfed so many other empires (Greece was the main one)so people were crucified to show what Rome does to thieves, con men, grifters, rebels, etc. and they are left there. The "Appian way" was lined with the followers of Christ all NAILED on crosses because it took the least amount of wood and nails and left them exposed & they bled to death (like billboard signs on the highway) Maybe you can't read the words but you know the image of Coke or Wonder Bra or cigarettes. The image says so much. Usually the crows peck out the eyes and raw flesh. They do eat meat(insects) This is road kill. The crows remember throughout history.
