I can understand the hesitation of Germany(blamed for 2 World Wars, Germany killed its military arm & became a Pacifist country(sorry to bring him up but Hitler saw the threat of Russia to Europe for Hitler hated Communism more than he hated Jews. He saw a militarily strong German is what stops the Russians from mowing down all of Europe and making it Communist. That was when Stalin was running Russia. Still, that was Hitler's beliefs. Germany is trying to forget the little Austrian. So the German economy does not rely on producing tools for war. Just because the iron curtain came down, East Germany is poor pig territory. I know because I have relatives in the East and in the West. The East is really poor., the language is even different. 56 years is a long time separated. It has been down 32 years and still it is the poor part of town.

WW1 was also the time for the "Spanish flu outbreak" so many died because of the flu(and when they go rotated out they took it to their home country and it became a plague in waves...4 waves in the U.S. Before that flu ran its course. Those had to be the worst years. (and the Flu is traced back to a training camp in Kentucky(almost narrowed it down to one tent) It was Spanish doctors that determined it was a flu virus coming from the U.S.; but you know about military secrets are kept under wraps?} so, as Spain was not involved in WW1, and it was discovered in Spain, it got the name Spanish Flu(when it actually originated out of Kentucky. It was a contact disease and as the men were in large transport boats all huddled together that disease spread in that 10 men died in the boat on the short boat ride over to Spain. Then the Americans walked up to France to enter the trenches where the disease spread like wildfire through the trenches to the French and British. When guys did their shift they got rotated out to visit family at home and that is how the disease spread to the general populations. The fact there was 4 waves of the same flu virus, we didn't have vaccines for flu yet....just shows how destructive this flu was (Covid 19 comes in second place)- - a totally different bug that is airborne. A War within a war that was not on anybody's side.
