So I do not know whether he was truly westernized and Yeltsin brought Russia back to self determination the soviet way? Gorbachev recognized the 1991 borders of Ukraine and so did Yeltsin. Putin is the one that disputes the existence of Ukraine as a sovereign country and that is where we are at now. It is a good thing that Russians are terrible fighters & they picked a fight with a FARMER(who has learned how to get rid of a variety of pests on his farm, as they are very ingenious & smart.
