Conscription has never happened in Canada,(Forcing a person to fight for your country)At that time we were a colony of Britain, so we fought under the British flag. Canada got its own flag in 1965. - still the Canadians volunteers fought like the DEVIL RELEASED. They were mainly farmers of different nationalities and were treated as the Canadian group. They fought in WW1 and WW2. It was them and the Australians that got the hardest jobs & their toughness showed as they were given the hardest, most heavily fortified ground first and penetrated the farthest inland amongst all the groups. It shocked the Germans & were respected (almost frightened) of the Canadians. the Germans Learned how the British fight and the opposite was true. Canadians did not play by British "rules", they were not British, so their WAR plan was DIFFERENT. Every Canadian had a different plan in their head, which makes them SO DIFFICULT TO FIGHT. . As far as I know, 18 was old enough to be accepted as a trooper to enter into the WAR. 1940 is before my existence so I can only read the stories from survivors of WW2.(or WW1) .. So essentially they fight like Ukrainians.
