The rest is undemocratic in a bad way. Add in the ancient system of the Electoral College and the lack of voting booths(that can shut down early in some areas)? But they want your TAX MONEY. Yeah, No? " Their excuse we have such a large population. India 1.3B people(or 4x's more than the U.S.), 20+ different dialects - - - and we CAN DO IT. Many countries do it on a weekend or even take the day off from work.(I can't remember being self employed)- The bars are closed that day. There is no excuse not to vote either by mail or being at the polling station .

Viking days? Yeah that may be true but it is ONLY the men that vote. Eric the Red gets the boot. But Greece is the first democracy. In the BCE era. Google it. Men still had the say, but it started there. Then Sparta (all 300 of them). The Roman Empire followed and I believe they also had a quasi democracy....the senators vote really cut deep -to choose their leader. "or not"

@jc.1191 L'Anse aux Meadows is that finger in Newfoundland is where they found remains of Viking longhouses which were basically sod walls and a timbered roof also of sod I believe. Definitely not the best place to be but there was no one around so they settled there. And did iron work as they made nails. They did venture to the mainland most likely though it is not visible from the island using Google Earth. But they found that the mainland inhabited by natives. Eric the red got kicked out of Iceland and then out of Greenland so I guess he did not get along with people. When he saw that there were many Mikmaw natives he turned around and headed back to Norway. After spending a few cold winters in Canada and unfriendly natives that did not have any gold or spices He headed back. The dwelling did exist they can tell by ground depressions. So actually did a reconstruction of the type of building the vikings probably built. . It has been said that Columbus heard of the Viking Sagas of a land to the West of Greenland. Columbus took a more southerly route. . Both explorers almost missed the continent, the Norse going to far North, and Columbus hit the Bahama's...so almost missing to the south and would have found Cuba instead or South America.
