Egyptians did it simpler. They lit a piece of rope and it burn through from one end to the other while they were working in a dark cave tomb. 8 hours later when the rope finished burning all to ash, that was the end of their shift. Centuries before the existence of Romans.(like 1000 years+)

Sorry bud, but the 300 movies have been made. They are not about to change that to something LESS. The US has used it in ALL their movie making, whether they are fighting Native Indians or space aliens. It sound heroic and that is good enough for the cinema.
