  7. The picture looks more like you got shown a water pump(as there is a shaft there@4:13) and I am betting it is leaking without you going into more detail about the actual crack."@3:31 that is a thermostat housing as there are no moving parts. .The plastic part is a thermostat housing AND water pump(and chances are good the pump seals were leaking as it rotates and wears out the seals) Usually seals can be bought separately and replace them- in some it is just cheaper to replace the pump with another. Usually 50,000 miles would be their lifetime. As you have an German made/British car ...yeah 30,000miles sounds about normal. >Time = money.< . For a guy who fixes and drives cars for 30+ years, I know some stuff. . I did love how you showed the more reliable newer cars and had VW Jetta/Golf/Rabbit(either one of them as they are all the same car) in the picture. (Probably the worst car they ever made.)I have had British made stuff. 2009 is a BMW made car. Like any BMW, they are money pits. A simple thermostat housing would last. The pump never does on any make new or old. They found pouring metal to make the combo set up "probably too difficult to pour" so they made individual parts that BOLT together. Works the same. . Old cars are FIXABLE. (Duct tape if you have to). New ones are more multifunction units eliminating bolts and screws and gaskets. But it is not repairable. Not swappable. That is "How they are continually "SCREWING"the CONSUMER. VW showed them once with the VW Type 1 Sedan air cooled car. It would drive PAST gas pumps and repair shops for years. It was that reliable. It was easy to work on, it could be repaired in the driveway with a screwdriver, wire, sticky tape and some copper wire & VW repair kit(screwdriver, socket wrench and 10/13mm Open end wrench & car jack. You got all the tools you need for most things. VW was "Unknown by most garages because they do not come in for repairs" That is why they were hated, as many mechanics had a family to feed and a child going to University...so they needed your money to pay his way. The fact you know the repair mechanic on a first name basis IS SEEING HIM TOO OFTEN. . The fact you did not know that you were comparing a thermostat with a combination thermostat/water-pump part is why I am schitting on your report. Possibly a non OEM part would be still 2 metal parts bolted together. , Certainly, every thing used requires maintenance. You have required maintenance since you popped out of Mommy's tummy. (Always wanting Food and drink.) Yet mom never complains. Life is like that. Car is your baby. It can't talk so you got to LOOK & figure out if it needs something and fix it while problem is small. . My 55 Chevrolet Belaire is running just fine with original enamel paint. Just saying.
