My toaster is 1955 made. Non polarized, not grounded. It works fine. Was thinking that maybe it is for a bare wire connection where the wire hooks into the hole. In construction we do lots of weird schit. Basically a hold over from old connection technology. Have to check out 100 year old structures with original wiring - maybe they were using the multi-stranded copper wires in those days like what smaller appliances use for a cord. As for the outlets being upside down - it seems to depend on the ELECTRICIAN. Mine are all 3 prong plugs with the mouth (the ground) is on the bottom. If your plug falls out due to gravity, the ground stays connected the longest which will throw the breaker switch killing the power if you have extra long tangs.
