Thanks for the nice explanation; it's good to know what happened there and why Raspberry Pi almost went extinct. I hope the American semiconductor industry takes off nicely. I also wish the electronics industry relied more on general purpose parts like field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), common microcontrollers and CMOS logic (a.k.a. "jelly bean components", as @EEVBlog calls them) than application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). These have their uses but if it can be done effectively with a general purpose chip, I really think it should. It's also for the sake of serviceability, you're not left with a dead unobtainium chip you can't replace with anything else.
