  1. "Only a woman would choose nano" If I knew this way back when in 2012, I'd start transitioning much earlier! :D Religious wars suck. I didn't care about the whole Vim vs Emacs debacle and used nano, still do! Distro? I used Fedora (that was the workplace policy back then), I use Debian on my personal systems, I also sometimes use Mint and recommend it to regular users. Rock on, fellow nerd! :)

  2. Nice news on the SSH updates. While there's no problem if both client and server run a modern version of openssh, it could be confusing to connect from modern to legacy system (e.g. an OpenWrt router which hasn't been sysupgraded for years), but all can be done with some knowledge and google-fu. Hey, nice to see the creator shoutout! Who knows, maybe I'll end up there someday :D

  3. Great news! I'm European and interested in R2R on our side of the pond, but I watch Louis Rossmann and his battles. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but hopefully it's gonna be a big win in the long run. Loved the episode :)

  4. Oh, I remember these from early 2000s! Still back in the days of us having a 56k modem, before switching over to a local ISP. It was probably THE only publically visible way of interacting with the webmaster. Ah, the innocent days of everything running on a kludgy hack... well, today's kludgy hacks are just hidden deep down in some libs.

  8. I've used Debian for almost 11 years now, since squeeze was stable, learning things a lot throughout the process. I'm on testing/sid rolling release for the software, would use stable on servers or other high reliability production use. Aptitude FTW. Had OBS break in deb-multimedia, went back to sid, it worked, stayed this way until they fixed it, ha. Oh, and I loved the release name part!

  10. It's wonderful to see you three nerds again, on a different channel! Friendship is magic, or sufficiently advanced technology. Damn awesome manual. Fraaaaaaaaaaaan-tastic indeed! Makes me wonder how many successful careers it started. Modern technical writing seems to lack this old style strive to get the knowledge across to different kinds of audience. The realization that we come from various backgrounds, some of us know microelectronics and the inner workings of arithmetic machines while others can barely type, and still making a manual that helps everyone. While people know how to use the computers without having to learn extensively, there's a downside to this: they don't understand how the computers work on a fundamental level. Same with phones, cars etc. - they have become magic boxes that do their stuff, no questions asked. And when they do a thing that wasn't expected, frustration arises, with no knowledge about the root cause and optimal solution. Been using Debian for 12 years now... Time flies like a Saturn V back in the day! 14:30 well, that's indeed farfetched a tad. I guess the authors watched Star Trek just a bit too much, haha.

  15. KDE Plasma user for a good bunch of years now, previously LXDE, Xfce and Cinnamon. Also a pretty early adopter of Wayland, and an early adopter of Pipewire. Oh my goodness, it's just so awesome, being able to route your audio streams however you want - it does wonders without having to go through the hassle of setting up JACK and resolving any application incompatibilities because some were JACK only, others were ALSA or Pulseaudio only. "Modern Windows is an exercise in removing your choices" - true... It's so frustrating whenever I have to use one. Fortunately, I stick with Debian on most of my machines. Any thoughts on the 6.12 kernel? No more PREEMPT_RT flavor since it became standard, and I wonder if it will bring any revolutionary change for the better or worse.

I had an infection too, probably XBB1.5 ("Kraken") which caused me to lose my voice almost completely and while it's pretty much back, it's not perfect and there's still dome harmonic distortion in it ;).
