Everytime I hear grandiose claims by Emperor Pal-o-putin and Darth Elon, two nifty rules of thumb come to my mind: "What can be asserted without evidence, can also be dismissed without evidence" (Hitchen's razor) "The amount of energy to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude larger than to produce it" (Brandolini's law) The problem is, the far right has been laying the groundwork for this takeover since the 2000s by spreading distrust of science, medicine and art. It accelerated in the late 2010s with social media recommendation algorithms becoming the new oh-so-wonderful tool for creating information bubbles and radicalization pipelines, delivering the content people want rather than accurate and reliable information. Social media influencers became another cult of personality, pretty much like the traditional TV celebrities, but with a lower entry barrier. Defunding education and overstimulating people's minds with social media brought erosion of critical thinking that would let people laugh those clowns off rather than voting them in... and here we are.
