@Youtube_Stole_My_Handle_Too true. I've seen this kind of discussion in the free & open source software context. Proprietary software apologists defended theirs using the security-by-obscurity arguments. I have to say that if you can't monitor what's going on with your device while it's being serviced, you can never be sure that the data will stay intact and secret.

How long will people keep using the word "hacker" for the shady types who invade privacy, destroy data or make it inaccessible? Gets on my nerves every time, me being a person who holds the hacker culture in high regard. I tend to treat the manufacturer's service as a black box where you never know what happens inside. Unless there's some effective regulation preventing the staff from doing malicious stuff, how can you trust it? It's a bare assertion fallacy at best. With small repair shops you either trust the people because you know them and can be sure that the equipment is in the right hands, or you can at least try to see them working, or ask them about progress, etc. Keep up the good work and don't eat Oreo, please :)
