As if "software-as-a-service" wasn't enough, now we've got "hardware-as-a-service". It's pretty common in the business-to-business practice, but consumer products were mostly free from it... other than planned obsolescence, either by maing the thing no longer relevant, or making it fail, or withdrawing support and shutting down the infrastructure the product needs to run. In neither case was the manufacturer so obvious about it though.
