  2. I've got a home automation system that I'll develop further as soon as I got the budget for it, now it takes care of scheduling a storage water heater and monitoring the water temperature. But... 1. the server is self-hosted on premises, using free&open source software (Supla, but I'm considering Domoticz or Home Assistant), 2. there is a separate wireless network for automation, with no access to the internet 3. devices don't have self-updating software 4. devices have a manual override, so the automated operation is optional for convenience - if something fucks up (e.g. the server goes down), I can still use them 5. no automation for absolutely critical systems e.g. door lock or utility switching I'm not that stupid to have another HAL9000 or GLaDOS at home! Lessons learned.
