Ha. My mom had a Thomson CRT TV from early 2000s where the user manual contained all the schematics. It's not as forgotten as you might think. And even if there were no schematics in user manuals, they could sometimes be found in books, or a service manual was to be found somewhere. Plus those devices were way easier to reverse-engineer compared to modern electronics that runs on tiny SMT components on multi-layer boards.

Damn, this one is spot on! That the problem is with today's technical culture rather than a bunch of companies. What if we, the users, are deliberately dumbed down? By assuming that we couldn't do even the simplest of repairs and not including info on them in the manuals, the manufacturers force us to use their service departments and dictate the terms of use of these devices. Got an older model that was perfectly suitable for you to use and something just broke down? Go to manufacturer's service where you'll just be told that this product is no longer supported and you gotta buy a new one... And so the landfills grow, resources deplete, people become poorer, CEOs become richer.
