I'm from India. I'll tell you what happeend - BJP made a mistake saying rhey were aiming for 400. Since thats almost twice the number of seats needed, Many BJP supporters simply did not go to vote. They took it fro granted that BJP woudk win.While those who wanted a regime change went to vote. So this is a Typical Election where people assumed Modi would win with a Great majority, Just like the past 2 Elections. I'm sure Modi's support will be back in 2029 and vote fiercely to retain his Majority. This is why even the Opposition is surprised about their high numbers.

In India, Anybody can wear a Burqa and claim to be somebody else and go vote for them. This is how Muslim Community gain an unfair advantage in elections. The Opposition knows this and appeases Muslims. Muslims often vote as a Block, They vote based on their Religion. While Hindus have shown that they vote based on Candidated and their Promises delivered.
