This kind of smog over cities was common during the days of Industrial Revolution in U.K and developing Nations too in the 1800s but then, There came a phase where they abandoned coal and went for a cleaner source of Power. I believe China will do the same, It's just a matter of a decade or two. Again, volcanoes in Nature releases more pollution than this, So I don't think this is a permanent thing.
