Well, You are wrong if you think this Mission has no purpose. You are thinking only about short term gains, But think of Long term. What was India just 30 years ago ? 80% Poverty and GDP was one of the worst in the world and India had to borrow money from other Nations. Now, India is one of the leading Top 5 Growing GDP Nations and in estimated to have the largest economy in around 30 years, And is lending Europe Trillions. Space Programs are cheap, They cost like 80 - 200 Million Dollars. On the other hand, Providing Decent Toilet facilities to like 30% of the Population (400 million People) is a really really high cost, Which might take upto 5 more years. India is already working to eradicate Poverty and provide accommodation to Slum dwellers by 2020. You can only do this much for a Nation that was built from the scratch after it suffer the worst famines in History under the British Empire for 400 years.

Did you know that 35% of all Technologies and Inventions in the world discovered in the 50 years was by NASA, because of their Space Missions ? So this would help India too, To improve it's Economy, Quality of Life, Way of Living. Think of 50 or 100 years in the Future when humans have bases or perhaps even Cities set-up on Mars, Which Nations would be the first ones there that would claim Martian Territory ? The ones that were the first ones to be present there of course !
