Well I know of Turkish Cypriots that would like to be independent, and I myself have spoken with such a person about it, but if you want to talk about the past then that's alright.
Before the Turkish invasion, the Greeks were the vast majority in the entire island of Cyprus, including the North. The reason it's populated by Turks today is because the Greeks living there were killed by the Turkish army or fled, which even used napalm to burn the land.
The Turkish army attacked after an unpopular and dictatorial Greek regime tried to install a similar government in Cyprus. It failed. The said Greek government was brought down by the Greek people. Turkey then invaded the secular, multiethnic country of Cyprus, in which Turkish Cypriots had a guaranteed preferential place in state positions, and whose flag was designed by a Cypriot Turk.
Before all that, there were occasional tensions between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, which, as was admitted by a decorated Turkish general, were supported and fueled by the Turkish army and secret services, which attacked Cypriot Turks in order for the blame to be put on the Greeks and so that violence would erupt.
After the invasion, the Turkish government has been trying to repopulate the land by relocating Anatolian, non-Cypriot, Turks to Cyprus.
Turkey didn't attack Greece, it attacked the whole of Cyprus, killing Cypriot Greeks and taking freedom away from Cypriot Turks.
