Fission reactors still produce a lot of waste that no one wants to take. Every year for the past 40 I have heard that we're on the brink of viable fusion.

@seven4489 There's still plenty of waste which no state wants to store. And onsite storage is not the best solution. We don't recycle fissile materials as they do in France, but we could.

@seven4489 I am also incorrectly conflating nuclear power generation with my experiences living around national labs. I grew up near Hanford. In my 20s I lived in Los Alamos. Then in my 40s I lived in Nevada as the Yucca Mountain project was being built. Controversy about waste everywhere I happened to live.

Or, it could be that they actually think ahead about the future for the kids that the Republicans keep pushing us to have. Why have a lot of kids if the world is going to be crap?
