@sadiejones7991 How did a NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT send our manufacturing jobs to China? (Oh, and BTW, Ronnie Reagan and GW Bush were the folks behind the creation of NAFTA). Did it make it easy for corporations to move manufacturing to Mexico, which again is neither China nor overseas? (Yes.)

@swampfox5660 The problem I can see is your insistence on playing blue-red and your obvious lack of historical background blind you to reality. First, learn terms like NAFTA and what they actually mean. And then learn the history of how NAFTA came to be. I lived these histories.

@swampfox5660 Ronnie Raygun LITERALLY campaigned for a second term based on a NAFTA idea (it didn't have a name yet). GW Bush had NAFTA on his platform. And they both had huge support from our manufacturing corporations to accomplish this.

@sadiejones7991 It did work out. Just not for US workers. There still are, to this day, American manufacturing jobs sitting in Mexico. The one thing I will (somewhat) agree with: NAFTA taught our US corporations a new trick...look for the cheapest labor markets on the planet, have those countries build plants, and exploit this to maximize profits. Read up on Newt Gingrich's "regret". He (and many others, but he was very loud about it) saw China as an opportunity for American corporations. He now says he regrets this. His regret doesn't help now. Add to this our ever increasing automation, and poof, there go our manufacturing jobs. Oh, and add to all this, our love for "good deals" at big box stores. Never forget how we played a part in this. At one time, Sam Walton used to advertise "American-made" as a selling point. I think he understood the absolute value of this. But even Sam was sidelined in the race for ever increasing profits.

@swampfox5660 Are you crazy? Of course I am not in favor of Chinese companies in the US. Now, the real question is why the US does not have laws to prohibit this. Should it be only the Chinese who we ban? The majority of foreign investment in the US is Canadian. And yes, I know how and why we see Canada as our ally and China as our foe. Do we ban certain countries and not others (I could see this). Could Congress pass laws like this? Sure. There would be backlash. US corporations have incorporated in China as well. China would retaliate. Elaine Chao and her family would lose.

@stephaniehall6309 Yes, it was a Free trade agreement. It has since been supplanted by a different agreement. The original allowed US corporations to move manufacturing to Mexico for the cheaper labor.

@swampfox5660 Why should we have laws? Because this is a nation of laws. That's how we do things. Congress writes the laws. Presidential powers need to be curtailed to their original intent. You seem to be seeking an authoritarian. We don't do that here. Look to Hungary or Russia to see why this doesn't work.

@swampfox5660 Do I think we shouldn't offend China? It, at this point, doesn't matter what I think. Why? Because corporate power will override what you or I want. The corporations which fund politicians and pressure them with lobbyists will decide our policies. Best way to really make your voice heard? Don't buy crap made in China. Look around your house and count how much we have funded China, their businesses, their workers. Go to a Walmart and find something NOT made in China or Vietnam or anywhere else there's cheaper labor. Now, who is going to reign in these corporations? Certainly not the guys who are elected by their campaign donations.
