I don't need to speak Hebrew.

@Yara-Li Why Korean? Just an interest?

@ZelimirkaNastic I speak four languages. My native Navajo, then English, then I learned Spanish because there are many Spanish speakers nearby. Then I learned French, mainly because I was interested in the latin ties between Spanish and French. It is interesting to me that latin overtook Europe with waves of Roman conquerers, became isolated and branched into so many variations. I have an interest in learning Portuguese soon because I have a friend who speaks Brazilian Portuguese and tells me that Portuguese is much closer to the original latin than Spanish.

@jrhartley4819 Now you have me curious to discover the Israeli educational systems. I do think the mandatory military service is of great value to a society as well.
2
@ZelimirkaNastic I definitely believe that. My native language has words that do not translate adequately into English. Even our value systems are different. But I exist in a world where I am a minority. The wonderful thing is that the US has a plethora of "people in the minority". Each brings something if you're open enough to see. I study for myself and my interests now. The opportunities to learn will certainly last my lifetime. I will stop being curious when I stop breathing.

@robertthomas6127 I think every generation since the beginning of time has worried about the succeeding generation. Hell, I know my parents and elders worried about me. But the majority of us mature to a point wherein they easily take charge. And believe me, I too will worry because they aren't doing things the way I would, but I also know it'll be alright. Or, at least I won't have to worry about it at some point.

Uh-oh. Trump was gagged again. He said he can't breathe.

@fredbecker607 Yes, there is. I was asking because I began studying Korean recently. I'm learning it simply as a passion. And because I have memories of simple Korean phrases in Tae Kwon Do.

@birgittavanblitterswijk6998 I don't speak Dutch, but I have no plans to visit the Netherlands. Why do you learn English? I am simply asking.
1
@ZelimirkaNastic Why?

@birgittavanblitterswijk6998 Fair enough. English seems to be a standard used all over the world. My grandfather stubbornly refused to learn it. He said he didn't need it and was happy where he was.
1
@birgittavanblitterswijk6998 Yeah, I can see that. I do have a nephew who schooled and now lives in Prague. He, his wife and son speak Czech exclusively at home for their son's sake. Their life is there now. My sister had to learn enough to use when she visits.

@birgittavanblitterswijk6998 I can say that the same attitudes exist here in America with immigrants who hold onto their native languages. I never saw the point in being upset. The melting pot aspect of America is what makes it so interesting. I can go to parts where Bengali is spoken a lot and get some fairly authentic Indian food. Same with Thai or Chinese or Vietnamese or just about any language or culture you want to experience. And I know that most Americans don't bring the same to places we go. We don't have much of a unique identity to bring to other places. Although I do think I could open a Navajo restaurant in Brussels one day. Hah!

@birgittavanblitterswijk6998 And, to be fair, I think we Americans learned our impertinence from the British. We just take it to new extremes. Sorry, but I can't fix anyone but me.

@leonardothefabulous3490 I think that closed-mindedness is prevalent in America right now. And has been for...well forever. But isolationist cravings abound right now. It is unfortunately 100% fear-based. There are many who see themselves as part of a group unwilling to give up their imagined majority. I say imagined because it is a construct of mainly the 20th century. It is most evident when filling out something like a census form. We are gathered into groupings based on wording of forms. There's much more to it, of course, but it's pretty representative of how our perceived divisions.

@jasthomas4291 No one, why? I could learn Hebrew, but no one near me speaks it. And I have no intention to go to Israel.
1
@robertthomas6127 I see. But I also don't know why you think people couldn't learn Hebrew. The greater point is that most wouldn't have the interest to apply themselves to learn it. People's interests, and therefore their attention, is on different things than I learned and was interested in. It doesn't make it good or bad, just different. I'm not quite to the "get off my lawn" stage of my life.

@sabraeast I thought that's what the original post meant. Perhaps I misunderstood.
