@c.s.440 1. He died a slave owner. 2. He defended the institution of slavery throughout his life, defending the rights of slave owners to collect their runaway "property" in non slave states. Did he write some swell poetry too? Sure. Does that make his slave owning ok?

@c.s.440 My entire point is that this country has never really come to terms with its past. And right now there's attempts being made to further whitewash that past. It's a festering boil which has not and will not go away until it is absolutely addressed in full. But no one dares do that, right? Because "feelings" may be hurt?

@peterbrooks3561 Does any of what you just typed justify slavery in any form? Btw, an indentured servant was not considered property, while a slave was. Most indentured servants had a contract of 5-7 years. A slave was a slave for life unless freed by an owner. Now, give me some accurate numbers on just how many black slave owners there were and contrast that with numbers of white slave owners. And then give me accurate numbers of black enslaved people versus white enslaved people.

@dner75-xh9le Or...I'd bet having some real conversations, nationwide, wherein we talk not only about that peculiar institution and all of the later discriminatory US and state government policies (oh, I know there's much you don't know) would go far in improving relations. Heck, it might even make you understand that anything that's happened in 60 years has barely scratched the surface of what's due.

Grow tf up, slavery in the US was almost exclusively white owners, black slaves. Attempts at whitewashing this fact is not going to help at all.
