  9. This. I gave up arguing with nuclear power plant proponents who blather on about how "safe" nuke power can be. They (and their families) should live in Shiprock, NM for a few years. An ore pile sat uncovered for 30+ years near neighborhoods housing hundreds of families. Kids would use it for bicycle jumps and trails. They covered the pile with dirt in the 80s and finally removed it in the early 2000s. This is not to mention the even larger radioactive mess at the mines/mills near town.

Why does the Old Guard still run the party? We need more progressives in leadership roles. Push left, not center!!!

  32. The Democratic Party Institution is and has been broken for quite some time now. Declarations of progressive virtues do nothing when all examinations of the party's actions prove otherwise. The idea of "next in order of sucession" doomed them in 2016, won in 2020 only because of spectacular Trump failures, and lost again in 2024. Quit micromanaging the primaries to get the desired result. Bernie knows a thing or two about the Democratic Party apparatus.

  38.  @oleksandrkhomandyak3860  I guess my best reply to you is that we have a history of being poisoned on our governmental designated reservations even with the knowledge of those who should regulate this. These things would not be allowed elsewhere in the US, but has been regularly ignored here on reservations. Now we are told "but we'll do it better this time" even before cleanups have finished (or even begun in some cases). Perhaps you can understand the reluctance of those affected to starting again.

  39.  @oleksandrkhomandyak3860  Even these negotiations to transport uranium ore across our lands in a safe manner were seen as concessions which the mining/milling industry did not want to make and which they continue to complain about. My bet is that the concessions (sealed transport trucks, daytime transportation, and safety/emergency plans for transport) will be downgraded by our new federal administration.

Part of her coursework involved returning to her reservation to measure the still existing ore spills in inhabited areas. Not just radioactive ores, but ores containing other toxic metals, uncovered and leaching into ground waters.

The US EPA has many documents available. What the papers don't include information on are the health impacts. Some effects are noted in NIH research, while others are in studies by the Navajo Health Services. Most obvious were the lung cancers experienced by uranium miners, but more worrisome today are the increased rates of birth defects in the Shiprock area compared to other parts of the reservation. Statistical studies have been done, but the data is based on small sample size (thousands, not millions of people). Problems in data collection are how remote the areas are, language barriers, and general distrust of researchers...oh, and localized superstitious beliefs.

The casinos were resisted for decades before one certain tribal president and some councilmembers found a way to line their pockets.
