If you know anything about Japanese culture, it shouldn't really surprise you. The phenomenon of the "hikikomori" of young men that have essentially withdrawn from civic society and the advent of entertainment in the form of video games, pornography, etc. The linear path of getting hitched and popping out kids seems a lot less appealing when there's so many alternatives for trivial pursuits.
