  1. Because many natives cooperated with the British and actually helped them subjugate their fellow natives. India is a key example -- a few thousand Brits could no way hold a few hundred million Indians if there was not mutual cooperation and support from Indians.

  2. @Zohaib Khan Tbh, many Muslims also fought for the British (i.e., Punjabis). In the end, the disunity of the Indians meant that rebellions never succeeded (for example, Sikhs helped the British in the rebellion of 1857).
