To be a colony implies lack of imperial integration (an administrative distinction between mother country and colony) as well as the absence of native rule (this leaves out most vassal states). You can colonize a territory in a biological sense, by settling the land, but it is not colonialism per se, because otherwise every single empire in history would be considered colonial.

And the Gajapati dynasty as well. Marathas raided and plundered and extracted tribute. But they could never dislodge Muslims from Bengal, South India, and the Northwest. They could not even govern their internal territories properly, there was no centralized and sturdy bureaucratic state apparatus. The simple fact of the matter is that one-third of the subcontinent is Muslim today. While in Europe it is less than 5%. And the Indians could never recover Pakistan or Bangladesh, unlike Europeans with North Africa and the Levant during the colonial age.

The british were in india for quite a long time, around one century and a half, so obviously their moral outlook on social evils like caste will be different in 1757 than the early 1900s. after all, back when britain first conquered bengal, they were still a major slave trading empire.

Every ten years a massive famine grappled British India, killing millions at a time.
